Hey Sonny,
I'm a 20 year old tenor saxophonist and you're by far my biggest influence on the horn. Your solo on St. Thomas on the album Saxophone Colossus was the first solo I ever transcribed and I still listen to and play it to this day. I have tickets to see you play in St. Louis this sure on June 22. It's a dream come true to be able to see you live! I was wondering if you would kind enough to give me a lesson. I know you're a busy man but it would mean the world to me if I could have an hour or so to talk to you and absorb some of your wisdom. Even if I can't have a lesson with you, I still hope to meet you. Best wishes to your health and well being! -Ian |

I hope you are feeling better. My dad and I were going to come to portland to see you but as I understand you fell sick. I saw your performance a few years back in Vancouver and loved it. Are you going to have another performance soon near Vancouver? I play tenor, and your live performance is infectious and inspiring. Watching you play with such joy and passion thrills me to no end.

All the best of health and happiness to you, from a half century listener (the Bridge, etc) and a player and lover of all the saxes. Thanks to Ben, Hodges, Sidney and all since it's great to have your contributions to the great art of sax. Phil

Hey Sonny!
We've met a few times, most recently on April 6-7 3 years ago at Orchestra Hall in Detroit. I play tenor.... Welcome to Woodstock! My brother has lived there for 25+ years and worked for 11 or so of them at Sunflower.... I'm visiting him in a few days, so if I see you in town I hope to say hello! Best, - Jeff Newton |

Dear Sonny,
You are so industrious and I know that you have many goals still to fulfill. I can imagine that you hear music in your mind and strive to make it available to all of us. We are very happy to receive your gifts of sound and imagination. And, I hope that you find time to rest and restore your strength because, as much as you need to share your music with us we need to have you make it. Much love and healing vibrations to you. XOXO, Kathy |

Dear Sonny,
I am so sorry not to be seeing you in Portland, but I am wishing you the absolute best in a speedy recovery. Your sax is an inspiration to me. Innovation and expression that I can hardly believe. I've seen you in Eugene, Portland, and Vienne and can't wait for another. Get well soon. |

Sonny I love your music an your vibe. The first song I heard of yours was "On the Sunny Side of the Street." with Dizzy. I hope you are doing well (feeling better). I hope to see you perform some day. I love what Jazz is and what Jazz can be. I am an artist and I love the way Jazz connects to visual art. Peace

I turned 65 yrs old 2 weeks ago. For my birthday present, my daughter Rosie bought tickets for us to see you perform at CalState Northridge. We just heard that you are ill and cannot make the gig. Ten years ago, we saw you at Escondido CA. You played that night for 3 hrs! We waited for you out in the cold after the show. You spent an hour speaking with us. You encouraged Rosie to continue playing tenor sax (she was high school 1st tenor chair in San Diego County competition that year)!
Hey, man. Get well. We love you. Please release Volumes 3,4, 5, 6 . . . Road Tour. Great stuff! We pray for your speedy & full recovery! Love, Man Alan |

I was born on September 7, 1940, and be it exactly ten years Mr. Rollins junior, I am very proud of that distinction. For me vintage jazz is my passion for which Mr. Rollins is the last of that. I am sad that Mr. Rollins is not feeling well and hope he is feeling better now. I had tickets for the Northridge concert but not worry I will be at the next one, even if it is not in California.
Sincerely Solomon Hose – Poway, California. |

Dear Mr. Rollins,
Exposure to the music you have shared is one of the reasons I play tenor sax. I draw inspiration from your recordings everyday. I perform jazz with a volunteer group comprised of members of SGI-USA in San Diego CA. Our group is committed to the achievement of world peace through the mechanism of individual human revolution. We practice Nichiren Buddhism, in addition to jazz at my home every other Sunday. I have recently fallen in love with bebop. Thank you for being a part of my world and for sharing the music of the Gods of Jazz. Sincerely, Fred Walmer |

My name is Joe and I run a big band in NJ named One More Once. We have been working on an educational program for 3 years where student big bands from local schools play an opening set for us, and also get the chance to play with guest artists and see the guest perform with OMO. These events happen at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair, NJ and also in the school's auditoriums when we need a larger venue. We were wondering if you may be interested in getting involved with something like this. It has been a WONDERFUL experience for everyone. We have had some great night, including a night with Wycliffe Gordon last April and one with Conrad Herwig this past Wednesday night. We would be honored to have someone like you involved. Please let me know if you may be interested. my email is onemoreoncebigband@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great night.

Sonny, I live just outside of Chicago. When I was younger, I played the Alto Sax. I must have been pretty good, because I made 1st chair in a matter of weeks, but gave it up. Guess I was more interested in girls, and too young to realize if I had stuck with it, I could have more girls than I could shake a stick at. Sonny, I have a 1952 Selmer Tenor Super Balanced, a real sweetie. If you play the Chicago area, and I can get a ticket to see you, and bring my Sax, will you play it just so I can say the Great Sonny Rollins played my Selmer? Wishing you many years of sweet Jazz. Sincerely, Timothy

Sonny,
Will you ever perform in the Cincinnati, Ohio area? Please |

Hi, my name is Danny Dalelio, I play the piano. I am a graduate of the Manhattan School Of Music. I also studied Jazz Piano with Mike Longo. When I first started gigging, I had the good fortune to play in a band with the late sax player, Davey Schildkraut. We became good friends. He was always offering me words of encouragement. I'm currently playing a steady gig at, "Brownstone Jazz", in Brooklyn. Also, I'm in the process of writing a book that I call, "Mashemea". This is the reason that I contacted you. I while ago, Davey came to me in a dream, he said that I should talk to you. Shortly afterwards, I was having a conversation with Bob Mover. He recalled a conversation that you had with Davey. Davey had asked you, if you had been able to make your circle smaller? WOW!! I couldn't believe it. It is exactly what my book is about. I knew that I had to at least try to contact you. I seem to be on an adventure. I keep hearing in my head: "Seek and you shall find". I feel like I'm being led by the hand to one revelation after another. I'm trying to sort it all out and apply to my music. I want to share this majic with everyone!
My phone number is (917)416-8848 |

Dear Sonny,
Last year or so, I saw your performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington. It was my first time seeing you live and it was great performance. At the moment, I am currently reading the "Life and Times of Thelonious Monk," and you and part of your history are mentioned quite frequently. So it was really an epiphany for me to read about and to see your younger self, while recalling your performance on stage. Appreciate your efforts. Thanks, Frank |

Sonny, I hope to see you in New York or Newark in 2013. You sounded great in Newark in 2007. You also sounded great in Philadelphia in 2006. The European audiences are great. Their radio and TV is so good. They are exposed to many cultural influences. We need to see you too in the Northeast USA.

Mr Rollins,
There is a debate that started on a saxophone website regarding your album Saxophone Colossus (a masterpiece, it goes without saying)and what horn you were playing on that recording. There are some who claim that you were playing a Buescher and most seem to believe that you were using a Selmer. Sometimes I think we get a bit too caught up in the equipment, but inquiring minds want to know! |

SONNY!

In 1955 you were a member of the Miles Davis group. I am wondering if by any chance you can remember if during that period you ever played All Blues. The reason I ask is that Symphony No 11 by the Russian composer Shostakovich consists largely of variations on All Blues. (Give it a listen, and you'll hear them). The problem is that the symphony was composed in 1956 and All Blues was not recorded until 1959, so how could Shostakovich have heard it? Any thoughts?

Hello Mr. Rollins, I often heard your name in my household as a child. I was raised in my early childhood years by my grand parents Henry (Hank)Clay Goodwin and Virginia Goodwin. As a child I was taken to Yankee Baseball games by a woman we refered to as aunt Haddie who's last name was Rollins. I was wondering if there was any relation? I just wanted to say I am blessed that through the power of the internet I was able to find out who you are, check out your accolades and enjoy your music. Maybe one day we can meet in person. My mother Ann still lives in Harlem on 119th street around the corner from where Hank used to live. God bless! and may you keep on keepin on!You have a new Fan indeed!
|

Hi Sonny, I have just reviewed Saxophone Colossus on my blog (above) which I bought recently for the first time (on CD, hoping to get a vinyl version on eBay in the future) and am a new fan, belated Happy Birthday and I hope you are keeping well, you are a true legend, best wishes, Remy
(pushing my luck but any chance of an autograph would be greatly treasured and appreciated!) |

Sonny:
I have one particular dream now and although it seem almoust imposible i just feel in my guts that it can be true. My dream is to meet you personally and receive some of your legendary knowledge through a saxophone talk. For now a dream, but if it is any chance please respond, thank you Best Wishes, Jairo Rodriguez x-x-x--x-x-- --x-x--x-x-x |

It´s an honour to write here...in a legend´s site!
Any word to describe about Sonny´s music will not "talk" the true about his sound... So i´m glad to say that i love his music since i was a teenager in the 90´s... and his songs, melodies was (& still) my company in a lot of day, noons & nite! Blow your Sax for more 130 years and more. Cheers From Brazil!! |

Hello Sonny,
I met you a few times many years ago, when I was studying the saxophone with Jimmy Heath at Queens College. I have heard you are very interested in maintaining great health, so I wanted to tell you I am working with an amazing water technology from Japan that produces water with tremendous health benefits. It is called Kangen water. You can look into it, if you would like, at [www.WatersofHealth.com] and also [www.Waters4HealthInfo.info.] It has been used in Japan in hospitals for over 35 years and there is a lot of research on it. Sammy Figueroa whom you play with, knows me from Miami Beach, where I now live, and knows some about it. I would be glad to provide you with more information , if you are interested. All the best, Hana Dolgin |
