Dear Sonny,
Any chance to hear and see you in Europe this year????????????????????? Greetings from a Winter Wonderland. Barbara |

Dear Sonny:
I am a 10 year old kid but I love your music. I play tenor and alto saxophone. I was at my school music program and my band director and I were talking about music and of course you came up in the conversation. He asked me if I knew a really famous song of yours. I said St. Thomas and he was blown away that I knew that when I'm 10 years old. Then I put my sax in my mouth and played St. Thomas for him and he was even more surprised. I'm in a garage band and we are auditioning for a talent show. We are playing 'Last Night' by the Mar-Keys. I'm going to play the sax solo. You are my idol in music and I hope to see a show someday. Peter Rabinovitz Needham Massachusetts |

Sonny, how could I ever forget you .....you were playing Navy Pier in Chicago in the late early 80's...I was ordering a beer before your show started, accidentally turned too quickly and you received my beer on your stage shirt....you winked at me after you started and it all didn't matter fromthat point now did it? You blew us all away...and continue to do so....thank you for being.

Dear Sonny,
My son discovered your music when he turned two. Six months later, he still listens and dances with his toy saxophone to St. Thomas, Global Warming, and Without a Song. He listens to the entire track - clapping along with the audience, and he knows the names of all of the band members. He knows every one of your CDs and many of the songs. Occasionally he wants to listen to John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins or Miles Davis, but he mostly wants to listen to your music. For his first DVD experience, we checked out "Saxophone Colossus" from the library and he watches your concert in New York two or three times a day. You have such a prominent place in his life. We don't think we should bring him to the Detroit show because others would probably not appreciate an enthusiastic 2 1/2 year old in the audience, and 8 pm is too late for him. I am writing you (and your tour manager) to see if we could come to a sound check or to see if there are any other daytime events planned in the Detroit area which we could attend. It is especially sweet for my husband and I that our son loves your music, because we went to your concert in Ann Arbor, MI for our second date! Hope to see you somewhere in Detroit! Dear Sonny Rollins, it was a joy to hear you play last October in Toulouse. What a fiery performance: just like the one you gave in Toulouse in 2006 (a track of which appears on the foirst ROAD SHOWS release).
If I had only one query it would be this one: I would very much like to see the release of new studio albums, you used to release so many of them, now they are too few and far between. Just saying this out of love for your music - I just can't get enough (I own ALL of your albums as original CDs, I'm not one for downloading...) |
Dear Sonny,
Thanks for putting your heart and soul into your music for so many years. The "9/11" CD is in "heavy rotation" at my house--it brought home to me what a state we would all be in if we had to face the tragedies of life "Without a song." If you make it to Richmond or D.C. in the near future, I'll be there! Love & Peace, Dale |

Happy New Year to Sonny, Friends and Family.
I have one request, if you probably plan to do a "Road Show Vol.2" CD. The unbelievable, incredible 40 minutes version from "Sonny Please" that you played in Munich, in December 2008 in the Philharmonie. I've heard you did a 40 minutes version of this tune in Berlin some days before the Munich concert, also. So it would be fine to me, if you take this one instead of Munich. Just like to hear this incredible performance of yours again. Thank you and byebye Juergen |

I just bought the theme from Alfie, I remember listening to this for the first time when I was 5 years old and it still sounds just as good, even though I'm 47 years old now. Sonny you are the Man!

At the age of 45, after setting my tenor down for 20 years I'm picking it back up again, doing what I love to do. Sonny, you were my main inspriation in the beginning and continue to be today. Have a good life.

Hello Theodore Walter Rollins!
I have been enjoying transcribing you and John Coltrane from mid to late 1950s. Trane said in a radio interview that you are a "great musician." The radio broadcaster commented that in a previous interview, you had said that you were checking Coltrane. I know that you two were sidemen to the same people; monk and miles in particular. Did you two ever interact besides for the Tenor Madness record date? Did you ever transcribe him? What influence do you think you had on Coltrane? What influence did Coltrane have on you? Did you two ever talk about music or life in general? Any feedback would be a dream come true! May you be blessed with good health and have a wonderful holiday. Ben |

Hi Sonny,
Do you have any plans for a European Tour? Or specifically a Concert in Switzerland? Best regards Dom |

Dear Sonny,
Thank you for yet another powerful performance. This time in Tarrytown, New York. Your timbre/tone, as always, was full of different colors, sometimes husky and other times just plain gorgeous. You are a true leader for all saxophone players. Your rhythm, melodies, original compostions are just extraodinary. We can't thank you enough for your sustained effort in presenting your intense music to us for so many years. More power to you Sonny!!!See you in 2010. |

Dear Sonny,
I was fortuned and very happy about the great performance last Tuesday at the Kennedy Center, is something that I never going to forget. I was trying to find a way of getting your autograph. If you or anybody that reads this can help me out to get this treasure I will be very grateful. My email is: bluescaracas68@yahoo.com |

WHOAH. I heard a song by chance on the net. St. Thomas. I've heard the song before...a long time ago.. My very first introduction to jazz as a vocalist myself was Ms. Sarah Vaughan. Coming across St. Thomas again while in a different place in my life, I just have this to say WHOAH. YOU Sir are something else. I have a great NEED now to go look up everything that you have done. Wish me luck please. :) Keep playing great :) Music is the expression of life. |

Love your work! I'm currently trying to find a lead sheet to The Most Beautiful Girl in the World off your Tenor Madness album. Any advice?? Thanks!
Your performance at the Kennedy center was beautiful. Your improvisations are so inventive and unexpected and long but never tiresome. The band was incredible ; a perfect foil to your style. I was mesmerized for the entire two hour performance. I immediately ordered your live Without a Song CD hoping it captures some of the excitement of your recent live work. Thanks for the great evening.

Mr. Rollins, thank you so very much for the time you spent with me backstage at The Kennedy!! You may just be the hippest cat I've met in any of my 44 years!! All the best in health and happiness to you and hope to see you again!!

Nice performance last night at the Kennedy Center. Loved the way the conga and tumba were tuned to just the right pitch for the latin tune in the middle of the second set. Sounded like little guitar plucks. Subtle and just right.
I saw Sonny in 1982 at VCU in Richmond, VA. Bob Cranshaw was there that night also. A young drummer and a Japanese guitar player then. He has changed a bit since then! But still wonderfully creative. |
Thank you so much - so enjoyed your concert last nigth @ the Kennedy Center. Hope to see you for a 3rd time next year - health, love, and peace.

Hi,
I'm the host/producer of Report from the Mountains, a poetry/jazz show that airs on WUCX public radio in mid-Michigan. This week's episode features "St. Thomas" from Saxophone Colossus, one of my favorite albums. You and your fans can check it out online at [reportfromthemountains.blogspot.com]. Love your music! Best, Marc |

Sonny very inspirational interview on Coleman Hawkins & Louis Jordan. We used to live nearby in East Chatham from 1973-1980. I would like permission to speak to you on your love of music and film you. I would post it to my blog and you tube. I also would like you to autograph one of your old records on Bluenote for me. Do you think this is possible? Thank you.

Hi Sonny,
Thanks for the night at the Barbican. It was great to hear you play. I too managed to get to meet you backstage and you were kind enough to pose for a photo and sign my ticket. You remind me of Ornette Coleman in that even after such an exhausting gig you still have the energy and commitment to meet and greet your fans afterwards. What a gent! Thanks Ben |

Dear Sonny:
i feel that i've improved on tenor more than ever before because i have been listening to your albums intensely for a few months, and learning all of your solos by ear. my technique is now so much better, and my sound quality is much more characteristic of my playing style. i just wanted to say thank you for the inspiration, and the indirect teaching. :) |
Dear sonny,
I am a young tenor player and just wanted to drop by and say that you inspire me to become a better player. Listening to some of the licks you lay amazes me. Thanks for everything |
Dear Sonny,
Read your statement concerning the racism problem in the U.S.A. and President Obama's politics. It makes me sad what you describe and think. But I guess it's realistic. Best of wishes Barbara |

just a heartfelt thank you for your excellence. I fell in love with your sounds when I saw the old Maxell tape commercial of you playing on the Brooklyn Bridge years and years ago. I started buying your albums and liking everything I heard. My favorite; Live at The Village Vanguard
I listen to often and after close inspection of the liner I found it recorded November 3, 1957! I was born early that morning. best of everything. Brian |

Hi all
I posted the other days about Amazon notifying me of a new Sonny CD that to me appeared to be a boot. Now they sent me another email about a ten disc box set - is this a boot or a budget label reissue:- [www.amazon.co.uk] If the former, then Amazon should NOT be selling boots.
Dear Sonny, all my best wishes for your European Tour. Looking sooooooooo much forward to your Paris concert on 10/29. Beautiful to hear that you'll record a new album next year. Hey that's GREAT!! Hope to see you face to face and give you "something very special from China"

ah Sonny you are my absolute favourite saxophonist! I'm playing St. Thomas in our school jazz band and I am attempting to play your famous solo. Obviously it won't compare but like it's so much fun to play! you should have more songs like that

Hi SOnny & website guys.
I have received an email from Amazon about a new two disc set of a 1963 Copenhagen concert by Sonny, the label being Jazzlips. Is this a bootleg or legit and if the former, how can Amazon, a legit company, carry it? Thanks, Dirk, England. |
Sonny, I like your cowboy interview!!! You're so ijoioioi (this is a word creation by myself when I was a child and means "sympathic"). LOVE, Barbara

Hi, Sonny.
I'm glad to plan to come and hear you plying in Paris, on your next date, October the 29th. As far as I can remember, I've haeard you playing for several years. Born in 1965, I began to play the guitar at 7. But, as the saxophone was something toe expensive to be bought by my parents, I waited until the age of 40 to buy my first tenor sax. A Yanagisawa T992... and, a few months after, a soprano one, S992... I now have regular lessons and can play the only mmusic that makes me live : JAZZ ! JAZZ is something deeply human. A music of the own valuable and universal energy : LOVE. Welcome in Paris, Sonny. I do wish you'll have much fun here. I'll be there. Take care. Olivier HERUBEL. |
Sonny,
I am writting to you in thankfull way, I want to thank you for sharing your music with all the world, your aproach to music is so spontaneous and natural, it's an inspiration to everyone, I hope you come to Portugal one day, you are a major influence to every musician around the world. Best regards and keep on doin' what you do best |
Your performance at the Kimmel Center in Philly was so moving, so inspiring. I'm a sax player (she said, humbly), and i've listened to your recordings for years, but i had never seen you 'live' before (what was i waiting for???) Besides being an amazing improviser, 'spontaneous composer', i've always felt that your playing has so much humor and playfulness (way out west, no business like show business)... your playing is so deep, but it feels so joyful--that's what i feel when i listen to you.... and speaking of 'deep', i love the 'it's all good' video on your website. i've been (re)listening to a lot recordings of thich naht hahn lately, and i am inspired to hear you talk about the mindfulness you bring to your playing, how spiritually you experience jazz and how, yes, you're still practicing! i learned 'without a song' from your recording, and, for me, it epitomizes your playing, which mirrors the lyrics at the end (which i'm sure you know): 'there'd be no love at all without a song.' your playing reminds me to keep playing, for the love and the joy of it all
thank you thank you! susan |
Thanks for being you .
