Dear rollins
i am a graduating highschool student from China. In my life, i lived without music and lifegoal,but occasionally I listened to your music.It lift me up. Since then I know what the soul if saxphone is. my parents don't love music,i have wracked my mind and heart to my parents for freely learning music and having a chance to America to listen to your music. I am just a nobody from China for you,even i can't speak fluently English,but you take me into the music world. You mean so much to me. I plead for a chance to meet you and listened to your music during this summer vacation. zouhanbang China |

Sonny! You're the greatest! Wish I could catch a concert this year, but you're not really playing anywhere near Wyoming, I see. Funny story: I caught a show in Montpelier, VT, 25 years ago or so. At intermission, I grabbed a lemon ice in the lobby, which got my fingers all sticky. I went to the men's room to rinse my hands off and there at the urinal, right next to the sink, was ... yes! You! Taking a leak. "How's it goin'?" you asked me as I washed my hands. I've always imagined you thought I sneaked in just to watch you piss, but, no, really, I had these gross, sticky fingers, really. Anyway ... my brush with your greatness. Be well! And thanks for all the AMAZING music!

Hey "Newk" when are you going to have a gig in the BIG APPLE?

Love your music and your genuine improvisation style, constantly creating new melodies and building them up. Certainly an influence as I build my own style.

Hi Sonny -
After speaking with you today I went home and spent quite some time listening to your music...wow! Love the Jazzfest '11 video on youtube - talk about a small world...one of my best friends works for WWOZ in New Orleans and worked that stage! I will definitely be listening more. It was a pleasure to "meet" you unexpectedly! You're a lovely man, all the best ~ Lisa |

2 shows in Michigan!!! We were wondering how we were going to manage to get to Europe as we wanted to hear a concert in 2012! Wow! Thanks! We will buy tickets now for both shows!
Noah still loves to listen to you, Sonny, and your band. We are very much looking forward to seeing you! Catherine |

I just read your interview in Terry Gross, 'All I did was ask.' I was gob-smacked by the simplicity and credibility of your answers. What a beautiful answer to the Q, 'What did you learn about yourself ...?' You communicated the 'classic battle' in a way that is a model to us all. Thank you. As we say, 'Until 120 years!'

I've been to about four or five Sonny Rollins gigs at the Barbican in London. The last was in 2007, when I got backstage to meet him (and my wife gave him some of her world famous chocolate brownies!). I was going to go to the 2010 gig but my son had been born in 2009 and I just couldn't warrant the time and cost. But when I heard Sonny was back at the Barbican for 2012, I thought I would actually go and also find out if my son - who'll be three years old in July - would be allowed to come also - he can recognise saxophones and sing along to Sonny's tune St Thomas (I did used to play it at my wife's stomach when he was inside!). However, to find out that within a day, most tickets had gone but even worse, that all stall seats and even further up in the Gods were £75 each, meant I have had to decide not to go. £75 buys a week's shopping almost... £75 gives me more than a tank of fuel in the car... £75 pays for half a term of pre school for my son! Who is pricing these concerts, is it the Barbican or the artist's management? It means Joe Public can't go see the guy, only lying solicitors and politicians can afford to frequent these gigs and the same applies at Ronnie Scotts. Whilst the common man is left out on a limb. I was really hoping to go this time but I definitely can't now. Oh well, I'll live with the fond memories of our meeting with Sonny from 2007.

I am truly inspired by Mr. Rollins, happy to share love of the same musical craft. What I take from My Rollins is the amazing fact that the practice NEVER stops. Its all about the love of the music. (My instrument is drums)
Truly appreciative, Tami |

Dear Sonny
You are the last of my great heroes of jazz musicians alive (1 to 15). It would be an extraordinary experience to assist this year to some of your public performances with my hole family.But I am not sure that I have the complete itinerary you will do during 2012.¿Would you please send me it? Congratulations, not for the President award, wich is nothing, but for the autenticity of your music and playing. You know that you had reached long time ago a level only accesable for two dozens persons in the whole history of jazz. With great effort and sapiencia. With love to your work, Mario Morando & family |

Dear Sonny,
After reading and watching some of your interviews and listening to some of your music, I felt I should say something about how much respect I have for the way you live your life and how dedicated you are to your music. I love your style of playing. You're an amazing saxophonist, I love listening to your music. I'm currently a junior in high school. I play the acoustic bass and you are one of my main influences, both musically and philosophically. Sincerely, Ethan |

Dear Sonny,
Congratulations on your recent award. |

Just watched the Robert Mugge film. Inspiring, man. I have been doing yoga for 3 years (Iyengar/Kundalini), meditating(vipassana) for 7-8 years.
When I was a college senior you played at my school, Penn State, around 1985, I was a stage tech and handed you a 'canon connector' This week I remembered that and got some of your videos. Peace be with you, and what a spiritual metaphor for breathing, listening to your songs! |

I had a strange dream last night (1/11/2012). You were playing in a small club with just a couple of people in the audience including myself. I knew you and couldn't believe that you were working in obscurity and struggling. I invited you home because you had no where to stay.
Funny thing is, I am not a "fan" and when I awoke I had to Google you to find out who you were. But you look exactly as I had seen you in my dream, you were playing a sax and singing, and I remembered your name. But frankly, I had no idea who you were/are until I looked you up. Now I'm 63 and it seems unlikely that I have never heard of you. I might have owned (or had a roommate who owned) an album by the Modern Jazz Quintet. Very freaky. Vivid. Just thought I would share it with you in case you dreamed a similar dream about a pasty white guy in his 60's. I'll check out some of your music too. |

Sonny, I used to live next door to you and Lucille in Germantown NY. I used to watch your mother-in-law and your dogs when you went out of town. I moved from the area in 1981 when I got married to Scott DeCicco. Think of you often. We moved to NC in 1996, brought Mom with us. We had three children, two of which are in Heaven now. We currently have two grandchildren that live in Massachusetts with their father, our son, Michael. Give us a call sometime, 919-742-6038.

Dear Sonny,
I wish to take this opportunity to thank you from the deepest of my heart for having accompanied me with your loving musical message all this way from my early youth till now, at age 50. I do recognize in you one of the prominent monuments of American Classical Music, nowadays known throughout the world thanks to you also, and through you I salute all those who have given so, so much to me musically and not only. Through the story of their lives, and the reflexions the moments of joy and/or sadness had on their recorded performances, I was also enticed to deepen my scant and superficial knowledge of American modern history to a now barely acceptable level. Thus please be the recipient of my sincere love and enthusiasm together with your long time friends Coltrane, Monk, Powell, Clifford, Roach, Davis, Evans, Prez...just to name a few. I owe you all so much and try to give it back to the people every time I have a chance to play my drums in public. Thank you, dear Sonny, Thank you. Thank you Andrea |
||||||||
|
Dear Sonny,
Thank you for the beautiful concert in Eindhoven last tuesday! We enjoyed it so much! It was the second time we joined your concert. The first time was in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam last year. It felt like music in heaven! If you come back again to the Netherlands in the future: count us in. We will be there, don't want to miss it. Wish you all the best! X, Esmeralda. |
||||||||
|
Sir,
I can't quite explain how vital your music has been to me throughout my life. While I was growing up, your music was played in our home, and my older brother Dan (Faulk) and I would study your recordings. We would each pick a part-maybe your solo, accompanying trumpet/trombone, piano chord structure, bass line, drum patterns-we literally did our best to learn from the musical bible of your recordings. My brother Dan ended up playig saxophone (tenor and soprano)in JJ Johnson's combo and big band during JJ's latter years until he unfortunately passed. Dan was blessed with the journey of playing alongside one of his idols, JJ, and vicariously playing with another one in you. Although I'm a drummer, I strive to be as expressive as I can-I get positive comments on my unique style of drumming, which I owe in large part to my years of studying your improvisation. Thank you, God Bless, and you are truly a legend among legends, Matt Faulk |
||||||||
|
Dear Sonny,
Your performance in Einthoven yesterday was really terrific! In particular, a new (I think) up-tempo tune was so cool. Your rhythm section ran like the wind in the grass. And you improvised on the rhythm. I wished I could have immersed myself into that tune much, much longer. Sonny, wherever you come within three hours drive range from my home, I will come to your concert. But if possible, please come to Dusseldorf next time (and let me hear your singing voice like in 2008...) Regards, Hideaki |
||||||||
|
Dear Mr. Rollins,
I am transcribing some of your solos. If you ever come back to Ann Arbor, Detroit or if you come to Lansing, I would love the opportunity to play them for you. I would also like to thank you. Your music makes me proud to be a saxophonist, and I cannot possibly show you what tremendous joy that gives me, or how incredibly grateful I am to you - but I am sure you understand. Indelibly in the soul, Ella |
