This past Saturday Sonny blew into Detroit like a Hurricane !
I've had the great opportunity to hear Sonny on every occaision (with the exception two years ago) he's performed in Detroit for the last twenty five years.
This time was special though; I was the presenter of him and the cats. Sonny came to play Saturday and everbody knew it......
The set list included Why was I born, St. Thomas, Don't Stop the Carnival, Without a Song, In a sentimental mood, and several other gems. More than two hours straight !
Highlights? There were many......
Bob Cranshaw's rock bottom steadiness, Bobby Broom's blues licks under the soloists, Clifton Anderson sounding more like JJ,....Kimati Dinazulu dropping afro cuban hand bombs, and Willie Jones III confirming he's one of the outstanding drummers of his generation.......
But the real Killer was Sonny......after playing for more than two hours, he then signed more than 100 autographs and memorabilia......
Thank You Sonny for your grace, elegance, honor, and humility. And did I tell you the best part?
Saturday, October 13, 2007 was Sonny Rollins day in Detroit.
Thanks Newk,
