Hi Mr. Rollins! I wonder one question:
How was your experience playing with the Rolling Stones? All the best and keep on "saxing"! |

But you just do what makes you smile and whatever that is dear sir- makes us smile as well. You are a treasure. Peace and blessings ♥~Stacy |

Hi Sonny,
I'm a huge jazz fan and love your music. When do you expect to come to Portugal? :) Regards, Pedro |

I've known and loved a track on an old tape for many years and just today have found out the name - Mava Mava. Here's hoping it might get an airing in London 16th Nov, as I bought the last ticket for the gig.
Dream set would also include A Nightingale Sang, My One and Only Love, The Way You Look Tonight and O.T.Y.O.G, although I have no idea what that stands for. Look forward to London Richard. |
||||||||

I am starting up - Music in the Streets of San Francisco. Would love to converse with you

Happy to find the site! To think, all I did was direct my feet to the 'Sonny' side of Jazz Street. I'm diggin' it here and I'll come back.

You are literally one of the best tenor saxophonists I've ever heard and I've heard quite a few. Just love your sound, absolutely beautiful, if only I could play sax like you.
Grover Washington, Jr. who died in 1999, he was an absolute legend, boy could he play the sax. Wish you'd done a duet with him, that would have been amazing to hear. Also, Michael Brecker who died in 2007 was an absolutely sensational sax player. Loved the sax on Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick. Brilliant saxophonist!! And John Helliwell, who played sax for Supertramp. Excellent saxophonist! That man is incredibly talented, plays flute and clarinet too and occasionally keyboards. The alto sax on The Logical Song is unreal, amazing! Lee Thompson, who plays saxophone for English ska band, Madness. Gotta love the sax on It Must Be Love, absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Let's not forgot Raphael Ravenscroft, who played the wonderful alto sax on Baker Street, absolute CLASSIC! Enough said, the saxophone is a truly beautiful instrument. |

Hello Sonny,
At this moment, I am listening to your CD "Without a song : the 9/11 concert". I never really listened to jazz and I have to say I didn't know you before (I'm only 19 y/o). My boyfriend gave me this CD, he loves your music and so do I. So I would like to know if your ever plan to come to Paris. I saw you will come to Marseille but that's actually very far from Paris. We would love to see you. (Sorry for my bad English). |
||||||||
|
Hi Sonny,
Your music has brought joy to my life ever since I was turned on to St. Thomas in high school and me and I was lucky enough to see you in concert at the University of Oregon in 1979. I'm looking forward to seeing you in SF in September. Keep Swingin! -Eric |

Hey Sonny,

Hi Sonny,
Do you have any memories of tenor saxophonist Ray Turner to share? Not too many people know of him, yet he was playing early on. Thanks, Greg |

When I learned that you were to be the featured attraction at The Jacksonville Jazz Festival I was overjoyed! I have loved your music since my college days at NYU in the early 60's. That tells you I'm right up there. Here's the thing: I own the ONLY jazz club in Jacksonville.
Thats right. Jacksonville has just one jazz club. And as an African American female there is no shortage of challenges for me to overcome...on a daily basis, to keep it going. I'm dreaming as I ask...but dreams sometimes come true. If you would poke your head in the door..while you're in jacksonville you will have dellivered to me..the absolute thrill of a lifetime. my website is [www.jazzlandcafe.com] and we're located at 1324 University Blvd. North. We are a hop skip and a jump away from the downtown area where you'll perform. I'm staying open late every night of the festival for After parties and Jams. Please consider this... you'll make an old lady cry with joy if you do. My number is 904-240-1009. my email is jazzlandcafe@aol.com. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Carole Freeman |

Sonny, you are an inspiration to me, not only as a saxophonist but as a person who carries a lot of wisdom about life in your heart and in your mind. I too, am a saxophonist. I consider you one of my idols- not only in a musical sense, but also from the standpoint of the "spiritual". I,too, am looking for "internal peace"- just as you did back in the late 60's. I search but I do not find. I know you've searched too. Are things getting better? Are we making strides in harmony among diverse races? religions? politics? governments? saxophone styles?(ha!)? I have so many questions and no answers- yet- there will always be oppression, corruption, wars...the poor. How do we fix it? As you did- I will work from my inside outward. Use your experiences in trying to become a beautiful person... as beautiful a person as you have through your many years of searching/meditation/prayers/etc. The only way the world is going to change is if we start with us & project that love outward. To take stands against corruption and tyranny- we have the technology to change things, we only need to use it in the right ways (selflessly). Yes, Sonny- there is still hope for the soul- maybe for mine. I agree with you- there is always room for optimism. PEACE!- may you retain it and my hope is that you will hope that I find "it". May you live to be 100 and beyond..thanks for everything Sonny.

Sonny, where could I send you a free book in which you're mentioned as being a powerful draw in NYC during the 1960s? The anthology is titled LIGHT YEARS. I think you would find it most enjoyable to read Paul Blackburn's poem "Listening to Sonny Rollins at the 5 Spot", along with various other comments on your music and influence during that tumultuous decade. Though your music played a small part in the incipient poetry movement you are definitely a quantifiable component on the scene.

Big fan. Saw you at The Village Vanguard with my friend and mentor Bill Scarlett. I just put you on my Pinterest to spread the music. [pinterest.com] Bye Mike Edging |

Sonny! You're the greatest! Wish I could catch a concert this year, but you're not really playing anywhere near Wyoming, I see. Funny story: I caught a show in Montpelier, VT, 25 years ago or so. At intermission, I grabbed a lemon ice in the lobby, which got my fingers all sticky. I went to the men's room to rinse my hands off and there at the urinal, right next to the sink, was ... yes! You! Taking a leak. "How's it goin'?" you asked me as I washed my hands. I've always imagined you thought I sneaked in just to watch you piss, but, no, really, I had these gross, sticky fingers, really. Anyway ... my brush with your greatness. Be well! And thanks for all the AMAZING music!
|
||||||||
|
Hey "Newk" when are you going to have a gig in the BIG APPLE?
|
||||||||

Love your music and your genuine improvisation style, constantly creating new melodies and building them up. Certainly an influence as I build my own style.

Hi Sonny -
After speaking with you today I went home and spent quite some time listening to your music...wow! Love the Jazzfest '11 video on youtube - talk about a small world...one of my best friends works for WWOZ in New Orleans and worked that stage! I will definitely be listening more. It was a pleasure to "meet" you unexpectedly! You're a lovely man, all the best ~ Lisa |

2 shows in Michigan!!! We were wondering how we were going to manage to get to Europe as we wanted to hear a concert in 2012! Wow! Thanks! We will buy tickets now for both shows!
Noah still loves to listen to you, Sonny, and your band. We are very much looking forward to seeing you! Catherine |

I just read your interview in Terry Gross, 'All I did was ask.' I was gob-smacked by the simplicity and credibility of your answers. What a beautiful answer to the Q, 'What did you learn about yourself ...?' You communicated the 'classic battle' in a way that is a model to us all. Thank you. As we say, 'Until 120 years!'

I've been to about four or five Sonny Rollins gigs at the Barbican in London. The last was in 2007, when I got backstage to meet him (and my wife gave him some of her world famous chocolate brownies!). I was going to go to the 2010 gig but my son had been born in 2009 and I just couldn't warrant the time and cost. But when I heard Sonny was back at the Barbican for 2012, I thought I would actually go and also find out if my son - who'll be three years old in July - would be allowed to come also - he can recognise saxophones and sing along to Sonny's tune St Thomas (I did used to play it at my wife's stomach when he was inside!). However, to find out that within a day, most tickets had gone but even worse, that all stall seats and even further up in the Gods were £75 each, meant I have had to decide not to go. £75 buys a week's shopping almost... £75 gives me more than a tank of fuel in the car... £75 pays for half a term of pre school for my son! Who is pricing these concerts, is it the Barbican or the artist's management? It means Joe Public can't go see the guy, only lying solicitors and politicians can afford to frequent these gigs and the same applies at Ronnie Scotts. Whilst the common man is left out on a limb. I was really hoping to go this time but I definitely can't now. Oh well, I'll live with the fond memories of our meeting with Sonny from 2007.

I am truly inspired by Mr. Rollins, happy to share love of the same musical craft. What I take from My Rollins is the amazing fact that the practice NEVER stops. Its all about the love of the music. (My instrument is drums)
Truly appreciative, Tami |

Sonny, downloaded Saxophone Colossus recently and listen to it everyday. I am sad to see that you arent scheduled to do any shows in 2012 in the New England/Boston area. Will this be changing? I look forward to seeing a Jazz legend like yourself in the near future! Thanks for the great music.

Dear Sonny
You are the last of my great heroes of jazz musicians alive (1 to 15). It would be an extraordinary experience to assist this year to some of your public performances with my hole family.But I am not sure that I have the complete itinerary you will do during 2012.¿Would you please send me it? Congratulations, not for the President award, wich is nothing, but for the autenticity of your music and playing. You know that you had reached long time ago a level only accesable for two dozens persons in the whole history of jazz. With great effort and sapiencia. With love to your work, Mario Morando & family |
||||||||
|
Dear Sonny,
After reading and watching some of your interviews and listening to some of your music, I felt I should say something about how much respect I have for the way you live your life and how dedicated you are to your music. I love your style of playing. You're an amazing saxophonist, I love listening to your music. I'm currently a junior in high school. I play the acoustic bass and you are one of my main influences, both musically and philosophically. Sincerely, Ethan |

Dear Sonny,
Congratulations on your recent award. |

Just watched the Robert Mugge film. Inspiring, man. I have been doing yoga for 3 years (Iyengar/Kundalini), meditating(vipassana) for 7-8 years.
When I was a college senior you played at my school, Penn State, around 1985, I was a stage tech and handed you a 'canon connector' This week I remembered that and got some of your videos. Peace be with you, and what a spiritual metaphor for breathing, listening to your songs! |
||||||||
|
I had a strange dream last night (1/11/2012). You were playing in a small club with just a couple of people in the audience including myself. I knew you and couldn't believe that you were working in obscurity and struggling. I invited you home because you had no where to stay.
Funny thing is, I am not a "fan" and when I awoke I had to Google you to find out who you were. But you look exactly as I had seen you in my dream, you were playing a sax and singing, and I remembered your name. But frankly, I had no idea who you were/are until I looked you up. Now I'm 63 and it seems unlikely that I have never heard of you. I might have owned (or had a roommate who owned) an album by the Modern Jazz Quintet. Very freaky. Vivid. Just thought I would share it with you in case you dreamed a similar dream about a pasty white guy in his 60's. I'll check out some of your music too. |
||||||||

Dear Sonny,
Looking forward dionysically to one of your European concerts!! Ina Barbara |

||||||||
|
Sonny, I miss you on Facebook! It's my fondest wish to see you in 2012 and to tell you in person how thrilled I am to share space in the universe with you :) To hear you speak about Jazz, to know that you are still playing with vigor and courage and creativity - it means the world to me and to so many of us! God bless you always - I will never forget how kind you were to me, publicly, a few months back. Congratulations on your Kennedy Center Honors!
