I'm sitting here listening to your first Blue Note record, and hoping you come play Chicago again sometime soon. I was really sad I couldn't make it to the show last year. I was out of work, and just couldn't swing the tickets. But that's sorted out, at least for now, and I won't miss it next time!

Dear Sonny,
Sadly, it has been many years since I last picked up my tenor. Musicians Dystonia slowed my performing and a crack addict took care of my beautiful Mark VI, with original lacquer, that Emilio Lyons modified for me, that belonged to my grandfather, who taught me how to play. I had the wonderful pleasure of studying with Joe Viola, When I first met Joe, I remember reading a letter you sent him that was hanging in his office. I thought that having a letter hanging on Joe Viola's wall was a great honor. I asked Joe for a recommendation for scholarship. He asked me to write a letter for him, and he would sign it. When I returned with the letter, Joe said that if there was a Pulitzer price for scholarship letter writing, I would have won it. The following week, when I returned for my lesson, I noticed that he had framed a copy of my letter and it was hanging next to your letter to him. I don't want to wander off course here, so I will end with a sincere thank you for the joy and inspiration that your music provided me. Peace and Blessings, Frank Bozak |

Dear Sonny Rollins,
Today I am listening to your song St. Thomas after learning Doxy. I am quite impressed by your love of music through hearing your solos and written notes. My name is Anna Coleman and I am 12 and I have played the alto saxophone since I was 9. How is it possible you have such great ideas writing songs and soloing on them? This morning I had to teach my little brother St. Thomas on the piano, then I learned it on my sax. I love your music. -Anna Coleman |

Hi Sonny, I drove 4 hours to see you last night in Melbourne. I last saw you live in London in 2004. You are still the Saxophone Colossus. Your tone and phrasing are unbelievably beautiful. What a privilege it was to see and hear you again, Regards, David

Dear Mr. Rollins,
last month I had the pleasure to play in a jam session, in Milano/italy, with Mr. Gerald Cannon, bass player of Mr. McCoy Tyner. After we played, he said to me, laughin', "I hear from your saxophone that you have listened too much Sonny Rollins", and I said that one life is not enough. Thank you for ever Stefano |

Dear Sonny -- I heard your concert at NJPAC on Friday night. It was a great gift and an inspiration. Your tone colors and expressive depths are beautiful and beyond. I also loved the overall sound of your group and the solo and ensemble work of all the players. Words are inadequate -- thanks so much!
|
|||||||||
|
I really enjoyed your show at NJPAC. But I couldn't hear the names of your band members. Would you be so kind as to tell me who they were. Thanks.
|

Caught your show last night at NJPAC.
I truly wish there was a dance floor in that hall. You had us all up and moving during the whole show and you wrapped up a fine set with something that had the whole place on its feet, clapping and hollerin' Nice stuff, Mr. R! God Bless! PS: You put a lot of younger folks to shame.... |
|||||||||
|
Dear Sonny: Your concert last night at NJPAC was a joyous experience. We listened, danced, and loved you and your music. The man in the mirror is stil OK.

Sonny:
I feel so fortunate to have seen you perform last Sunday in New Orleans at the Jazz Fest. Your performance of Don't Stop the Carnival was especially emotional for me. It took me back to your last appearance at the festival 15 or 16 years ago. I am 60 years old and have seen many musical performances and that performance 15 or 16 years ago was for me the best I have ever experienced. It was transcendent. Once again on Sunday you took me to a place that no other performer has been able to do. I am so appreciative and feel so lucky. Most importantly you make me feel so alive and inspired. |
|||||||||
|
Sonny thank you thank you thank you for the absolutely incredible awesome show you gave us at the Jazz Fest on Sunday. Your indomitable spirit, your powerful music, the intricacy, delicacy and brilliance of your interplay with your band, lifted everyone's spirits. We did not want you to leave at the end and I had a feeling you didn't want to either. WE will never forget it. I hope and pray you come back to Jazz Fest in 2012!!!
|

Hey Sonny man just saw you at Jazz Fest today. I was backstage because I had performed earlier that day, and I wanted to come say hello but secruity was being a pain. Also I had wanted to come see you after the performance, but I had stuff came up and I had to leave(to my dissapointment), but I heard that some of my friends got to meet you, so I assume that was killin'. So man just wanted to say you were killin', I loved it, and you should come back down some time. Hopefully next time I'll get to be backstage, have my horn with me, and I'll get to meet you. Alright man well cool stuff today man, bye -Will. H

Dear Sonny - My daughter is an 11th grade saxophone student. She has studied jazz and sax for over 6 years. She has formed a sax quartet with her classmates and they play at not-for- profit and church gigs.
As we live close (suburb of Albany)we would love to meet you and have you give them some pointers. As "a master lives around the corner" it would be great if you could hear them and instill some of your wisdom on them. I have attached a recent YOUTUBE video from a x-mas concert. Since we live close (Albany NY) we could come to you in Colunmbia County. Please let me know if there is anyway you would be able to accomodate this request. Feel free to e-mail me at jscohen2002@yahoo.com [www.youtube.com] Thank you for bringing wonderful music and joy to the world. jeff |

St Thomas In Your Head
Dear Mr. Rollins, A bebop saxophone playing friend (one of your biggest fans) used to play Saint Thomas all the time. He died in a car crash long time ago. I wrote a tune about him: St Thomas In Your Head. Your awesome theme is in the ending of this song and the lyrics are full with jazz giants. The solo is blown on the old sax of my friend. You can watch the clip and listen here: [www.tennesseestuds.com] I sincerely hope you like it. Keep on blowing, you are a true hero! Love from Amsterdam |

|
Mr. Rollins,
I began studying jazz 3 years ago out of a true love for the art form. Out of the many great artists who I have come to love, your playing is the one that speaks to me the most. Is there any chance you will be playing in or near Pittsburgh in the future? I was hoping to take the road trip to NJ this May, but am unable as a friend is getting married and I have obligations to the event. To experience your playing live would truly be incredible. Thank you for contributing so much great music. |

I know this concert on November 18 2011 isn't yet in the itinerary here - but I have my seat already - in the 2nd row
Much LOVE, Barbara |

Hi Sonny
I can't wait till you come to Sydney. |
|||||||||
|
Good afternoon Mr Rollins,
I hope this message find you well. I am a tenor saxophonist myself and studying music and specializing in jazz at The University of Hull. In the next few months, I am due to take my next performance exam. Along with some time signature risks I am taking with 2 of my chosen pieces in my quartet, I will also be playing your signature St Thomas. I realize you probably get messages like this all the time but would you have any advice for soloing over St Thomas? The past few months, i have been struggling to over come a metaphorical brick wall with my playing, this has got to a stage where I have played at a jam night and I have been so fed up with what I am playing that I've got hung up on it for weeks afterwards. I wondered if you've ever gone through this and if there are any inspirations you have or ways for over coming such problems? all the best and please keep making a difference. Greatest respects, Benjamin |

You have given us very much. Robert |

Mr. Rollins CONGRATULATIONS for receiving the National Medal of Arts from President Obama. You have been a national treasure ever since I was a kid growing up in Harlem; and I can't wait to see you again when you come to southern California.

|
Dear Mr. Rollins,
You, along with Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, are the musician I look up to the most as a truly spontaneous jazz improviser. I love to read your interviews because you have always been concerned with your practicing first and foremost! I am a young pianist who is committed to being a jazz musician, and I was blessed to have a teacher who showed me early on that being an artist is not about fame or recognition, or about how many gigs we play, but about the daily struggle with the craft. Your words and your beautiful playing help me to persevere and keep practicing. Thank you! |
|||||||||
|
Thank you so much. Wonderful. Magic. There will fly something to you within the next days

Dear Saxophone Colossus,
I just purchased my tickets to see you at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 8, 2011. I know it's been at least 12 years since I saw you last at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. I was a young girl and first heard "St. Thomas" live. I remember first purchasing your Global Warming album. I look forward to seeing you in May. Thank you for making beautiful music for so long. We are, indeed, very blessed to experience your music live. Best, Kathryn |

I can't remember how long it is I've been listening to your music - I remember trying to get hold of The Bridge album when it came out in 1962 and I was 18, anyway, as you will know, you have a very large, enthusiastic audience here in the UK because of the joy that your music has brought to our lives. It is now 5pm today, but I listened to three in London's Barbican Concert Hall was amazing; a concert memory I shall never forget; the place was jam packed.
With every good wish, Alex |

Mr. Rollins
I attended a concert of yours about 9 months ago in Detroit, Michigan with a friend of mine. Being a growing saxophonist (I want to earn a degree in saxophone performance once I graduate from high school), the concert was an enormous source of inspiration for me. After listening to your albums and watching videos of your live performances on youtube, the concert was a dream come true. Sitting in the third row from the front, the concert was many times better than I could have ever imagined. I want to thank you personally for the amazing experience that I had at that concert and the vast amount of inspiration that I gleaned from it. Please come to Michigan again soon!! I would love to attend another concert Finally, merry belated Christmas and happy new year! |
